Every year, SVOSH members work hard in our lab sorting, cleaning and verifying prescription eyeglasses that are obtained through donations from all over the country. These eyeglasses come from a variety of different sources – Lions Clubs, other volunteer organizations, and even collection boxes that are set up in retail stores. The sheer volume of donations that SVOSH at SCO receives is more than enough to keep our members working for hundreds of hours combined each academic year. These donations make up the majority of our eyeglass inventory and are an extremely vital resource.
However, despite all of the donations that we receive, there are still some prescriptions that are hard to come by. These specific prescriptions are always in relatively high demand at our volunteer clinics every year, and it is difficult to tell some patients that we simply do not have what they need in terms of prescription eyewear.
Starting this academic year, SVOSH at SCO is now partnered with DIFF Charitable Eyewear in an effort to provide even more patients with the prescription eyewear that they need. Just this year, DIFF has already donated 9,000 pairs of glasses, which include reading glasses and prescription eyeglasses for nearsightedness. These donations have greatly supplemented the inventory that the organization is able to draw from to equip our clinics and will make a considerable impact on SVOSH at SCO’s ability to provide prescription eyeglasses for patients at our clinics this academic year and for many years to come.
